Manchester Postcard Fundraiser at Chinese Art Centre 7.12.12

Come along to bid on my manchester inspired nearly postcard sized artwork this Friday at  Chinese Art Centre, Manchester. All work is anonymous until purchased when you find out who the work has been created by! See more information below...

Manchester Postcard Fundraiser
Launch Night 7 December 2012 (6.00pm - 7.30pm)

Here at the centre we have developed an idea by recent ‘Breathe Residency’ artist Luke Ching. Upon discovering various bright and cheerful postcard images of Manchester’s fair city, Luke felt that they needed some adaptation to reflect the more regular rainy climate here in the North West of the UK! The postcards looked beautiful and reflected the city perfectly as you can see below.
Just in time for the Christmas season, a whole host of generous artists and even some Chinese Arts Centre staff will be adapting Manchester postcards for sale here in our shop and on-line. The postcards will be available to buy as of 7 December here in our shop, so do keep an eye out! Each postcard will be available to buy at £30 and all funds raised will be used to support Antonia Low’s residency (14th Jan – 20 Apr 2013).  The postcards will also be available to buy via our on-line shop shortly!

Jerwood Drawing Prize at Jerwood Gallery, Hastings 8.12.12 - 6.01.13

My drawing 'Navigating the Junction' will be on show at the Jerwood Gallery, Hastings, in the first part of the tour for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the show runs from 8.12.12 - 6.01.13.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize 2012 is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. Judged by an independent panel of selectors; Stephen Coppel, Curator of the Modern Collection, Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum; Kate Macfarlane, Co-Director of The Drawing Room, London; and Lisa Milroy, artist and Head of Graduate Painting, Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, the Prize aims to explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice in the UK. As a response to the ever-growing popularity of the competition, and the present financial landscape of the arts, Jerwood Visual Arts (JVA) and Drawing Projects UK are delighted this year to announce an increase in the total prize fund, from £11,000 to £17,000, a rise of over 50%.

From its beginning, the Jerwood Drawing Prize has championed the breadth of contemporary drawing in the UK. From a submission of almost 3,000 entries, the selectors have brought together an exhibition of 78 works from 73 artists. The shortlist includes established artists as well as relative newcomers and students fresh from art college. The selected works are exhibited at JVA at Jerwood Space, London from 12 September - 28 October 2012, and will then tour to venues across the UK including the new Jerwood Gallery, Hastings and mac, Birmingham.

The prizes, were awarded to the winning artists at a ceremony on Tuesday 11 September 2012, and are a first prize of £8,000, second prize of £5,000 and two student awards of £2,000 each.

The Div/sion of Power, curated by Institute of Temporary Art, 16th - 25th Nov 2012

I am pleased to let you know that I have been commissioned to make a work in response to the Didsbury Parsonage and Fletcher Moss Art Gallery, for the upcoming exhibition 'Div/ision of Power' curated by Institute of Temporary Art.  My poster/drawing  'The foreign language of trees' provides a map of all the foreign origins of trees that are now positioned within the garden.  Having being sourced by colonial explorers at the time building the original building, many of trees are one of the only examples of these specimens outside of Kew botanical gardens. A large number of the trees have come from countries that have in the past endured British rule through colonial activity.

INSTITUTE OF TEMPORARY ART PRESENTS FLETCHER MOSS ART GALLERY WITH THE DIVISION OF POWER, AN EXHIBITION WHICH, FOCUSES ON THE STRUCTURES OF CURATORIAL PRACTICE PLACING THE ARTIST, CURATOR INSTITUTION AND AUDIENCE UNDER EXAMINATION.

SUPPORTED BY THE DIDSBURY PASONAGE TRUST UNDER THE CURATORIAL DIRECTION OF HIGGINS AND RENSHAW, DIRECTOR OF IOTA JOHN LYNCH WILL PRESENT WORK BY ARTISTS PRACTICING IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND.

THE EXHIBITION WILL OPEN 16TH NOVEMBER 2012 AND WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE 25TH NOVEMBER 2012.

Adopting its title from a governmental blueprint to define the separation or division of power between constitutional authorities to establish a balance within the body politic. Reference is made to the separation of powers; within this context we define the roles as artist-curator- institution- audience.

After splitting the practice of curation and of exhibitions themselves, the exhibition represents the idea of a gallery reinstated. Fletcher Moss Art Gallery (Didsbury Parsonage) was once a branch of Manchester City Art Gallery. At its peak Fletcher Moss Art Gallery exhibited works of Goya, Lowry, Turner and other eminent artists of the time. Fletcher Moss Art Gallery closed its doors for the last time in the late 1980’s, the space since languishing in the care of the local authority.

The Institute of Temporary Art in association with Higgins & Renshaw presents the idea of Fletcher Moss Art Gallery returning. The ‘temporary’ notion of exhibitions within contemporary society in many ways exemplifies the relationship of curatorial practice (within the four stages stated) as having fluidity.

The exhibition challenges the audience and the artists, providing the opportunity for them to reappraise and reconsider the nature of conventional exhibition etiquette. IOTA will present work by over 40 artists, which is specifically commissioned to respond to the space and its environs.

‘The Division Of Power is an exhibition that aims to examine the very nature of curatorial practice. In many ways it is a research methodology, which we are presenting to the public. The discussion about curatorial practice is a key topic, which is seemingly becoming a catalyst for debate and intrigue in this area.

The exhibition can be viewed as a complete examination of institutional critique in its presentation. This exhibition has been developed to shine a spotlight on the four key stages involved in the process of curating this exhibition. The artist, curator, institution and audience become part of a wider conversation about the very nature of Fletcher Moss Art Gallery, and by extension all artistic institutions’.

Access All Areas, Manchester School of Art, PV 27th Sept 6-8.30pm

‘Access All Areas’ displays work from the five artists upon the 2011/12 AA2A scheme at Manchester Metropolitan University; Mark Beecroft, Julie Cassels, Rachel Goodyear, Bethan Hamilton and Jenny Steele.

AA2A is a national set of schemes hosted in visual art departments in Higher and Further Education institutions that provide access for practicing artists to specialist workshop and support facilities.  This opportunity allows artists access to equipment which may be difficult or expensive for them to source independently, allowing them to realise a project or period of research.  In exchange, artists bring ideas and experience to the students and institution.

2011/12 AA2A artists would like to thank Manchester Metropolitan University for generously providing access to postgraduate lecture programmes, the library and the range of workshops, in addition to a grant towards the costs of materials.

Mark Beecroft
Mark Beecroft’s practice is an exploration of process, working with predetermined systems and mathematical forms. Mark has used his time on the AA2A scheme at Manchester School of Art to develop skills in digital fabrication, working with laser cutting technology. Beginning with patterns created from handmade mathematical models he has created digital files, which have been laser cut in a range of materials. These pieces are then ‘played’ with, experimenting with different configurations before being assembled by hand. The results are a series of sculptural forms that unite digital technology and handmade craft.

Julie Cassels
Julie Cassels’s uses the photographic image as her medium, the AA2A residency has enabled her to concentrate on the three dimensional aspect of her work in the form of digitally reconstructed objects. ‘Someone Else’s Things’, the latest series of work, considers the replication of an object and the relevance of its source. Drawn to rare or, potentially, obsolete ‘found objects’, she digitally reconstructs them; their associations consider the past, the future and possession. The main body of work carried out during the residency was a ‘virtual’ restoration project. A rare 17th Century bodice was digitally restored and then recreated using digitally printed fabric. The Whatcombe Bodice project is on show at the Gallery of Costume, Platt Hall, Manchester.    www.juliecassels.co.uk

Rachel Goodyear
My practice focuses on drawing, working predominantly with pencil on paper. The AA2A scheme has helped me to explore ways to subtly allow my drawings to slip out of the paper into the realms of sculptural form. However, rather than a fixed permanence that an object can suggest, I am finding ways to give my 3 dimensional forms the similar nature of fragility and fleeting moments my drawings on paper offer.  With drawing at its core I have been exploring the relationships between the imagined space of the paper and the real gravitational space we occupy. For Access All Areas, I will be presenting a collection of works that suggest a state or change or escape; graphite covered paper forms quietly explode from the chest of a life size porcelain bird, whilst drawings on paper attempt an escape from their 2 dimensional world like a papery ectoplasm.
www.rachelgoodyear.com

Bethan Hamilton
An exploration of the obese female body with a focus on mass, weight and disproportionate form through mark making. My project has been focused on the creation of ambiguous forms; indeterminate in sex, species or context, through drawing & printmaking. I sought to visualize a selection of these 2D forms as tangible 3D sculptural objects through a series of individual frames viewed within a 360°rotation.
Artists Access to Colleges has provided me with the time and freedom to make mistakes. Through the scheme I have learnt new skills and revived old interests, had access to an extensive range of facilities at Manchester Metropolitan University and met some kind and inspirational individuals. AA2A has changed the face of my practice for the better. I feel excited to be making art again.
www.bethanhamilton.co.uk

Jenny Steele
Jenny Steele’s practice explores our inhabitation within physical and digital architectures, through print, drawing and installation. During the AA2A scheme at Manchester School of Art, Jenny has focused upon her experiences as a new inhabitant, moving within city centre streets of Manchester and the architectural structures she encounters.  Access to book-making, printmaking, sculpture and digital editing facilities have allowed Jenny to explore her research further through still imagery and movement and sequence.  She has produced a series of editions of books, laser-cut wood block prints, screen-prints and animation as a result of time and generous access to a wide range of workshops.

followingthemarketsquare - Residency Commission for InCertainPlaces

I am currently working on a residency for InCertainPlaces (UCLan, Preston) and Preston Remembers, where I am exploring how people use and interact within the Preston Market Square, and relate if at all, to the War Memorial.  I am documenting the followingthemarketsquare project on this research site - http://followingthemarketsquare.wordpress.com/research-in-progress-2/.

I am also trying to source information from people who use the square, and also families of war veterans who use the square (or war veterans themselves) through an online survey.  If you use the Preston Market Square - please visit this site to take part - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JZ62BWJ.

I would also like to speak to people who use the square, so please do email me if you are interested in having a discussion by email or in person - jcsteele@hotmail.com.

#Knitterfeed @FutureEverything Conference, 19th May 2012

'Yarn bombed tree' outside Cross Acres Community Group, Wythenshawe

On Saturday 19th May 2012 at the Handmade event at FutureEverything Conference, I will be involved in #Knitterfeed, which is a collaborative project between myself, artist Elizabeth Wewiora, digital programmer Tom Kinniburgh and the Cross Acres Knitting Group (Wythenshawe).

In the run up and during the event, we will be exploring twitter through hand knitting objects and forms that communicate this sprawling network, with a very skilled group of knitters that regularly make out of the ordinary statements through their craft.

Video Jam 2 at Antwerp Mansion, 22nd April 2012, 7pm til late

My animation 'If you're lost, remember what you saw on the way', has been selected as one of the short films to be accompanied by sound devised by a musician, at the next Video Jam event at Antwerp Mansions, Manchester on the 22nd April 2012, from 7pm onwards.
Video Jam is an experimental night of short films, each accompanied by a different live musical performance. After a successful first night back in January, to which hundreds of people unexpectedly turned up, we thought it silly not to organise another one.

The programme includes a really eclectic mix of silent films submitted by both amateur and professional filmmakers, artists and animators. Each of these have been paired with a musician/sound artist with the intention of providing an original soundtrack. What results is a 'blind collaboration' of sorts, the filmmaker and musician remaining anonymous to one another throughout the process.

Join us in celebrating the qualities of live music and improvisation for this unique encounter between sound and vision!

**Doors open 7pm for 8pm start. After show party to follow - late. **

£2 on the door to cover costs - this is a not-for-profit event!

DIRECTIONS:

Antwerp Mansion is situated on Rusholme Grove, the turning off the Curry Mile where 'Ambala' is (two streets before Hardy's Well when travelling away from town). The entrance is 100 metres down the road on the left through a big gate. There will be people to signpost you from the road.
