Looking Back | Moving Forward, ICP, Preston, 15th-24th March 2016

Over and over...jump in, digital print on wallpaper, 2016

Looking Back | Moving Forward
In Certain Places Project Space, Preston

Opening Tuesday 15th March 5-7pm, continues until 24th March 2016

Looking Back | Moving Forward will show new sculptures and drawings by artist Jenny Steele from her recent research project, which has investigated Seaside Moderne architecture across the North West of England and Scotland.

Seaside Moderne was a style of modernist architecture built in the 1930s between World War I and World War II, during the mid-war leisure boom.  During the 1930s, everyday workers were newly allocated annual holidays in the United Kingdom, and used these to travel to the seaside to enjoy themselves away from everyday work toils. Palaces of fun, such as the Blackpool Casino and The Midland Hotel were built to house swathes of people, offering a glamorous place to relax within uplifting and optimistic design.

Jenny Steele has created new work specifically designed for the In Certain Places Project Space, which reflects on the design of the The Midland Hotel, Morecambe, The Blackpool Opera House, The Carron Restaurant and Outdoor Swimming Pool, Stonehaven.

LOOKING BACK|MOVING FORWARD is kindly supported by Grants for the Arts, Arts Council England, University of Central Lancashire and Johnstone’s Paint.

I am looking forward to opening my studio at Rogue in a few weeks, as part of Manifest, an artist-led festival, showcasing the talent of North West contemporary artists in a series of exhibitions and events across Manchester and Salford.
Designed to take advantage of the increased creative and media spotlight on the city as a result of the Manchester International Festival, Manifest will give visitors a flavour of some of the artistic activity taking place across the two cities all year round.
Rogue will be holding an additional Open Studios event over the weekend of July 10th – 12th. The opening party will be on Friday July 10th from 6 till 9pm and the studios will be open to the public from 12 – 5pm on Saturday July 11th and Sunday July 12th.

I will be showing some research in progress from my Looking Back|Moving Forward project and drawings from my solo project The Fair at Glasgow Open House Art Festival.

The Fair #7, Screen print and pencil on card, 10.5cm x 40.1cm, 2015

The Fair is a long established Glaswegian holiday taking place in the last fortnight of July.  Businesses and organisations closed; families travelled ‘doon the water’ to Lancashire seaside resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe, which acted as sites of enjoyment and glamour from everyday work. ‘The Fair’ is a multi-site exhibition across five artist’s homes, where artist Jenny Steele has created drawings reflecting on ‘seaside moderne’ buildings; Blackpool Casino and Midland Hotel, Morecambe.  Souvenir drawings were posted to inhabitants, allowing them to decide how to position the drawing in their own home.  A publication of the project will be produced post festival.

Opening times: Sat 2nd – Mon 4th May 2015 12pm – 6pm

Sites:
Venue 9, 3/2 Montague Projects, 34 Montague St, Glasgow, UK, G4 9HX

Access All Areas, Manchester School of Art, PV 27th Sept 6-8.30pm

‘Access All Areas’ displays work from the five artists upon the 2011/12 AA2A scheme at Manchester Metropolitan University; Mark Beecroft, Julie Cassels, Rachel Goodyear, Bethan Hamilton and Jenny Steele.

AA2A is a national set of schemes hosted in visual art departments in Higher and Further Education institutions that provide access for practicing artists to specialist workshop and support facilities.  This opportunity allows artists access to equipment which may be difficult or expensive for them to source independently, allowing them to realise a project or period of research.  In exchange, artists bring ideas and experience to the students and institution.

2011/12 AA2A artists would like to thank Manchester Metropolitan University for generously providing access to postgraduate lecture programmes, the library and the range of workshops, in addition to a grant towards the costs of materials.

Mark Beecroft
Mark Beecroft’s practice is an exploration of process, working with predetermined systems and mathematical forms. Mark has used his time on the AA2A scheme at Manchester School of Art to develop skills in digital fabrication, working with laser cutting technology. Beginning with patterns created from handmade mathematical models he has created digital files, which have been laser cut in a range of materials. These pieces are then ‘played’ with, experimenting with different configurations before being assembled by hand. The results are a series of sculptural forms that unite digital technology and handmade craft.

Julie Cassels
Julie Cassels’s uses the photographic image as her medium, the AA2A residency has enabled her to concentrate on the three dimensional aspect of her work in the form of digitally reconstructed objects. ‘Someone Else’s Things’, the latest series of work, considers the replication of an object and the relevance of its source. Drawn to rare or, potentially, obsolete ‘found objects’, she digitally reconstructs them; their associations consider the past, the future and possession. The main body of work carried out during the residency was a ‘virtual’ restoration project. A rare 17th Century bodice was digitally restored and then recreated using digitally printed fabric. The Whatcombe Bodice project is on show at the Gallery of Costume, Platt Hall, Manchester.    www.juliecassels.co.uk

Rachel Goodyear
My practice focuses on drawing, working predominantly with pencil on paper. The AA2A scheme has helped me to explore ways to subtly allow my drawings to slip out of the paper into the realms of sculptural form. However, rather than a fixed permanence that an object can suggest, I am finding ways to give my 3 dimensional forms the similar nature of fragility and fleeting moments my drawings on paper offer.  With drawing at its core I have been exploring the relationships between the imagined space of the paper and the real gravitational space we occupy. For Access All Areas, I will be presenting a collection of works that suggest a state or change or escape; graphite covered paper forms quietly explode from the chest of a life size porcelain bird, whilst drawings on paper attempt an escape from their 2 dimensional world like a papery ectoplasm.

Bethan Hamilton
An exploration of the obese female body with a focus on mass, weight and disproportionate form through mark making. My project has been focused on the creation of ambiguous forms; indeterminate in sex, species or context, through drawing & printmaking. I sought to visualize a selection of these 2D forms as tangible 3D sculptural objects through a series of individual frames viewed within a 360°rotation.
Artists Access to Colleges has provided me with the time and freedom to make mistakes. Through the scheme I have learnt new skills and revived old interests, had access to an extensive range of facilities at Manchester Metropolitan University and met some kind and inspirational individuals. AA2A has changed the face of my practice for the better. I feel excited to be making art again.

Jenny Steele
Jenny Steele’s practice explores our inhabitation within physical and digital architectures, through print, drawing and installation. During the AA2A scheme at Manchester School of Art, Jenny has focused upon her experiences as a new inhabitant, moving within city centre streets of Manchester and the architectural structures she encounters.  Access to book-making, printmaking, sculpture and digital editing facilities have allowed Jenny to explore her research further through still imagery and movement and sequence.  She has produced a series of editions of books, laser-cut wood block prints, screen-prints and animation as a result of time and generous access to a wide range of workshops.

MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY, 19th-29th October 2011, Hatch Space

‘Occupants Will Vary’ by Jenny Steele
2011 Pencil, pen and letter transfer on paper 120 x 260 cm

‘Schematic: Hatch Space 2011’ by Harriet Hill
2011 Felt, wire, expanding foam, paint 240 x 125 cm

MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY is a 2 person exhibition by Harriet Hill and Jenny Steele that explores the in-habitation and use of space within the built environment of the Faircharm Trading Estate and the Hatch Space studios themselves. MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY aims to record, reflect and celebrate the current activity in these mixed-use spaces within this heterogeneous community.

Jenny Steele exhibits a map, ‘Occupants Will Vary’, 2011, that charts movement and spacial use within the micro community of the Faircharm Trading Estate. For the past month, she has spent time questioning and observing the organisations and individuals that occupy this multi-functional block of units. The map ‘Occupants Will Vary’, communicates data regarding use of physical and digital space compiled through an online questionnaire, presenting a sample of potential usage at any one time. The work is informed by social anthropologist Timothy Ingold's research that highlights the static nature of maps, that are unrepresentative of physical in-habitation and movement.

Steele's practice considers our constant in-habitation of digital space by playing on metaphors of physical space, cartography, architecture and town planning. Through her multi disciplinary practice, she continually seeks ways in which to come to terms with the intangibility of the digital, and its clash with our embedded cognitive behaviour and cartesian perspectives. Steele is currently based at Rogue Studios, Manchester, and is the Artist in Residence at Manchester Metropolitan University for 2011-12. Steele is a graduate of Goldsmiths MFA (2007).

Harriet Hill has created ‘Schematic: Hatch Space 2011’ as a response to the microcosm of Hatch Space Studios. The idea of the central space which acts as both a self contained gallery for public communication and an expanded corridor; an interstice with doors leading off into the autonomous artists’ studios beyond. The fixed nature of exhibits in a gallery contrasts with the life and activity in an artist’s studio and the shifting nature of the creative process. Both are spaces for thought and provocation. Hill takes this idea and the physical structure of the space and works viscerally, using materials specific to her practice. Out of this a piece evolves which is then drawn out into the space. This sets up a dynamic that seeks to question the fundamental relationship between the viewer, the object and the space that contains and defines them.

Through her practice, Hill explores ideas around the conflict between autonomy and belonging and the fact that we are drawn to that which is more powerful than ourselves – physical, social, political, theistic. This manifests in her work, through the notion that a physical entity – object, material, structure, space – can simultaneously incite both desire and repulsion. Hill is based in London, and is also a graduate of Goldsmiths MFA (2007).

MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY aims to record, reflect and celebrate the current activity in these mixed-use spaces within this heterogeneous community.

For MULTIPLE OCCUPANCY, Harriet Hill presents a sculptural work made as a response to the microcosm of Hatch Space studios. The work is informed by social anthropologist Timothy Ingold's research that highlights the static nature of maps, that are unrepresentative of physical in-habitation.

For an Open Day event on Saturday 22nd October 2011, Hill and Steele have invited other artists to co-occupy the gallery space. Artists: Ahmed & Carpenter, Hannah Doyle, John Deller, Inigo Rousham, Lucia Serenkova, Penny Skerrett and Nicola Smith will show film and video works that explore themes of multiple occupancy from different perspectives. Frog Morris will perform poetry about the local community of Deptford, and Manchester based Matthew Bamber will bring a live streaming of his own studio to Hatch Space for the day.
